Is a straight razor shave better?
A barbershop straight razor shave is worth it when you want the closest, most careful shave you can get, or a reset before an event. The barber softens the beard with hot towels and lather, shaves with a single sharp blade, and finishes with a soothing aftershave. At home, a cartridge or electric razor is faster for everyday shaving.

What happens in the chair
- A hot towel softens the beard and warms the skin.
- Lather goes on, and the barber shaves with a straight razor, following the grain.
- A second pass can go closer where your skin allows it.
- Another hot towel, then an aftershave to calm the skin.

| Time | About 30 minutes in the chair | A few minutes |
Keeping the beard?
You can still get the razor work. The Bearded Craftsman ($45) cleans up the cheeks and neck with a straight razor and hot towel, then trims and shapes the beard. For the full shave, book The Royal Shave Experience ($45). Read more on the beard trims and shaves page.
