How long does a fade last?
A fade looks its sharpest in the first days after the cut, and how long it holds depends on how short it starts. A skin fade begins at bare skin, so any growth shows soonest. A taper or a fade that starts at a short guard grows out more gently. A line up between cuts keeps the edges clean while the rest grows.

What makes a fade grow out faster
- How short it starts. The closer to skin, the sooner growth shows.
- How high it goes. A high fade has more short hair on show than a low taper.
- How fast your hair grows, and how much contrast there is between the fade and the top.
- The edges. A soft hairline and neckline make a fade look older than it is.
How to stretch it
- Book a line up between full cuts. At The Chair, The Precision Chair Line Up is $25 and takes about 15 minutes.
- Ask for a taper or a low fade if you want longer between visits.
- Book your next cut before you leave, so you are not waiting on a free chair when it starts to grow.
Which fade to book
At The Chair Barbershop in River North, the Signature Fade ($57) is a blended fade that grows out clean, and the Crafted Blade Fade ($67) is taken down with a razor finish for the sharpest look. Read the full comparison in skin fade vs taper fade, or see every fade on the fades page.
